Ganderbal residents urge admin to remove Russian poplar trees

Ganderbal, May 9: Residents across several areas of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are facing growing health concerns due to pollen released by Russian poplar trees, with locals alleging that authorities have failed to address the issue despite repeated pleas.
Residents from Ganderbal, Nagbal, Gund, Cherwan, Hayan, Palpora, Ninhama and Kangan, said that the pollen from Russian poplar trees has triggered severe respiratory problems, including allergies, breathing difficulties and asthma-related complications, particularly during the spring season.
Muhammad Sahil, a resident of Kangan, said that patients suffering from allergies and pre-existing respiratory ailments are the worst affected. “The administration must immediately remove the Russian poplar trees and replace them with non-allergenic alternatives,” he urged.
Health expert Dr Zakira said pollen allergy remains one of the major causes of respiratory illnesses during the pollination season. “A significant number of patients visiting hospitals during this period suffer from pollen-related allergies and respiratory distress,” the doctor said, adding that despite existing guidelines, little progress has been made on the ground.
Advocate Mudasir said that despite legal directions issued in 2015 for the removal of Russian poplar trees, the authorities have failed to implement the orders. He termed the issue a serious public health concern and called for urgent intervention.
Another resident, Saliq, said the pollen has severely affected asthma and allergy patients, leading to worsening symptoms and increased health complications.
Residents have demanded immediate action from the administration to cut down the Russian poplar trees and replace them with safer alternatives to reduce health risks and public suffering. (KNO)
