Sopore, May 11: Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson Syed Darakhshan Andrabi on Sunday said that drugs pose a serious threat to society and are silently destroying the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
She was speaking at the “Asluk Aalav” public discourse programme held in Sopore and organised by the Jammu & Kashmir Development Foundation as part of a social transformation event series across the Valley.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Andrabi said that Jammu and Kashmir had already suffered due to gun violence for decades and now society was facing another challenge in the form of drug abuse.
“Drugs are as dangerous as guns for society. Earlier we supported the government in fighting terrorism, and now we must support efforts to eliminate the drug menace from Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
She said that people from every section of society must come forward and play an active role in creating a positive environment for the younger generation.
Dr Andrabi appreciated the organisers for holding programmes on social awareness, environmental protection, promotion of local products and moral values among youth. She also thanked BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul for supporting the initiative.
She said that harmful influences spreading in society must be addressed on priority and stressed the need for collective efforts to protect future generations.
Dr Andrabi also praised the “Drug Free Jammu and Kashmir” campaign launched by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and said that the campaign had received strong public support across the Union Territory.
Several prominent personalities participated in the event, including Bilal Parray, Molvi Waseem Ahmad, Maulana Agha Abbas Rizvi, Advocate Tabassum Rehman, media personality Sahil Muzaffar, Dr Nazrul Islam, Dr Farida and Raja Waqar. (KNS)
