Jammu, May 26: Panic gripped parts of the posh Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu city on Tuesday evening after gunshots were fired during a police operation in the Mini Market near Green Belt Park.
According to police, a team from Gandhi Nagar Police Station, accompanied by the Special Operations Group (SOG), had launched an operation around 6 PM against suspected criminals in the area.
During the operation, the suspects allegedly attempted to flee and rammed their vehicle into the SOG vehicle, a police spokesperson said.
The suspects then opened fire on the police party, prompting SOG personnel to retaliate in self-defence.
The area was immediately cordoned off, and additional reinforcements were rushed to the spot to secure the locality.
Police said cognisance of the incident has been taken, and further legal action is underway.
The brief exchange of fire caused panic among residents, though normalcy was restored after the area was secured. (KNO)
