Kashmir’s next revolution will rise from its fields

Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu regarding the transportation of Hajj pilgrims’ baggage may appear, at first glance, to concern a logistical issue. In reality, it highlights a matter that touches upon the dignity, convenience and religious sentiments of thousands of pilgrims returning to Jammu and Kashmir after completing one of the most sacred journeys of their lives. The decision to transport checked-in baggage separately by road from Ahmedabad, owing to operational constraints at Srinagar Airport, has understandably caused concern among pilgrims and their families. Many of the returning Hajis are elderly citizens who have spent years preparing for this spiritual journey. After enduring long flights and the physical demands of pilgrimage, they deserve a seamless return home. The inconvenience extends beyond delayed luggage. For Hajj pilgrims, items such as Zamzam water, dates and religious gifts are not ordinary belongings. They carry deep spiritual significance and are traditionally shared with relatives, neighbours and well-wishers soon after arrival. Delays in receiving these items disrupt long-standing customs that are an integral part of the Hajj experience. The Chief Minister has rightly urged the Centre to explore measures that would ensure baggage reaches Jammu and Kashmir concurrently with the pilgrims themselves. Such a step would not only ease hardship but also demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural and religious practices of the people. The issue also underscores the need for better coordination between aviation authorities, airlines and Hajj management agencies, especially when operational restrictions are known in advance. Pilgrims should not bear the burden of administrative shortcomings. As the annual Hajj operation continues, authorities must work together to find a practical and compassionate solution. For the returning pilgrims, timely delivery of baggage is not merely a matter of convenience but a matter of respect for a deeply cherished religious journey.
