Talks with PM focused on statehood, finances, development: Omar

Srinagar, Jun 15: Restoration of statehood, Jammu and Kashmir’s financial position and the pace of development figured prominently during Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the Chief Minister expressing hope that the discussions would ultimately benefit the people of the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said he discussed a range of issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir during his interaction with the Prime Minister.
“Different issues were discussed, including restoration of statehood, the financial position of Jammu and Kashmir and the pace of development. We hope this meeting will benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The Chief Minister’s remarks assume significance as demands for restoration of statehood continue to remain a major political issue in Jammu and Kashmir, with the National Conference government repeatedly raising the matter before the Centre.
Referring to governance and development, Omar Abdullah also highlighted the issuance of appointment orders to newly selected Junior Engineers in the Public Works Department, describing the move as an important step towards accelerating infrastructure projects.
He said Junior Engineers serve as ground-level functionaries who play a crucial role in implementing development works and monitoring projects on the ground.
“Today we handed over appointment orders to new Junior Engineers in the PWD. They are the ground-level workers and their induction will help speed up development activities,” he said.
The Chief Minister also commented on emerging diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran, expressing hope that ongoing negotiations would succeed and prevent further instability in the region.
Omar said it was premature to comment on the details of any proposed agreement but hoped that attempts to sabotage the peace process would fail.
“We should wait until Friday. We do not yet know the contents of the proposed deal. The United States, Iran and perhaps others involved know the details,” he said.
He further observed that Iran had suffered significant losses during the recent conflict and described the situation as an injustice to the country.
“Iran did not seek war. It suffered losses and should be compensated. I hope these issues find a place in the peace arrangement and that the Strait of Hormuz is reopened,” Omar added. [KNT]
