The revelation that Srinagar International Airport is handling nearly 4.4 million passengers annually against a designed capacity of 2.5 million is both a testament to Kashmir’s growing connectivity and a reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure expansion. The figures reflect the Valley’s increasing importance as a tourism, business, and travel destination, but they also expose the limitations of existing facilities. Airport authorities deserve credit for managing passenger traffic efficiently despite operating well beyond the terminal’s intended capacity. Maintaining smooth operations and avoiding major congestion under such circumstances is no small achievement. However, efficiency alone cannot substitute for infrastructure that matches present and future demand. The surge in passenger traffic is a positive indicator of economic activity. Tourism has witnessed a steady rise, business travel is expanding, and improved air connectivity has brought Kashmir closer to the rest of the country. These developments have transformed Srinagar Airport into one of the busiest aviation hubs in northern India. Yet, continued growth will inevitably strain facilities unless capacity enhancement keeps pace. In this context, the Rs 1,667 crore expansion project assumes immense significance. The proposed upgrade is not merely a construction exercise but an investment in the region’s future. Expanded terminals, improved passenger amenities, better operational efficiency, and enhanced cargo handling capabilities can strengthen Kashmir’s tourism industry, facilitate trade, and improve the overall travel experience. The challenge now lies in ensuring timely execution. Infrastructure projects often lose momentum due to delays and procedural bottlenecks. Given the airport’s current burden, the expansion must remain a priority and proceed without unnecessary setbacks. Srinagar Airport’s overcrowded terminal is, in many ways, a symbol of Kashmir’s growing aspirations. The task before policymakers is to ensure that the infrastructure keeps pace with that growth. A modern, expanded airport is no longer a luxury but a necessity for the region’s continued development.
