Srinagar, Jun 17: National Conference (NC) Member Parliament (MP), Mian Altaf Ahmad on Wednesday said the party’s proposed protest for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be held as per schedule during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Speaking to reporters, Altaf said the protest was the party’s responsibility and would take place at the designated time. “The Chief Minister has also made it clear that the protest will be held as scheduled. We are fulfilling our duty, and it is a good step,” he said.
Commenting on reports of defections and political developments in various parties across the country, the MP said such trends were detrimental to democratic values. “India is known across the world for its democracy, secularism, independent judiciary and free media. It is unfortunate that these institutions are becoming weaker,” he said.
Reacting to claims by political opponents about instability within the ruling alliance in J&K, the senior NC leader said party leaders were already responding to such statements, and there was no need to comment on them repeatedly.
On Muharram and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the MP expressed confidence that all arrangements would be made smoothly. He said Muharram programmes would be conducted peacefully and that Kashmiris have always welcomed and served Amarnath pilgrims, even during difficult times.
“The people of Kashmir, particularly in areas like Pahalgam and Kangan, have always extended hospitality to the yatris. I am confident that the government will ensure their safety and make adequate arrangements for their stay and other facilities,” he added. (KNO)
