Srinagar, Jun 19: The Army has launched ‘Operation Shiva 2026’ to ensure robust security arrangements for the forthcoming Amarnath Yatra, officials said on Friday.
Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, visited the forward areas of Kilo Force and Baltal to review the prevailing security situation and assessed the operational preparedness of troops deployed for the annual pilgrimage.
In a statement an Army spokesman said” The Army Commander was briefed on the current security environment and the measures undertaken to enhance vigilance and operational readiness in the region.”
“During the visit, Lieutenant General Sharma, accompanied by General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Balbir Singh, interacted with commanders and troops and stressed the need for sustained alertness, effective coordination and mission-oriented execution to remain prepared for all challenges,” the statement said, adding, “He also reviewed the arrangements being put in place to ensure a secure environment for pilgrims during the forthcoming yatra.”
In a post on X, the Army’s Northern Command said Lt Gen Sharma visited the forward areas of Kilo Force and Baltal to review the security situation and evaluate the operational preparedness of troops deployed for Operation Shiva 2026.
The post said the Army Commander was briefed on measures being taken to strengthen vigilance and operational readiness, and underscored the importance of sustained alertness, effective coordination and mission-focused execution while interacting with troops and field commanders.
The Army reiterated its commitment to providing a safe and secure atmosphere for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra in close coordination and synergy with all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, authorities have declared the entire Amarnath Yatra route, including both the Pahalgam and Baltal axes, a ‘No Flying Zone’ from July 1 till the conclusion of the pilgrimage. Consequently, helicopter services for pilgrims will remain unavailable during the yatra. Devotees can reach the Holy Cave Shrine on foot or avail pony and palki services throughout the pilgrimage.
The 57-day pilgrimage is scheduled to commence on July 3 through the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal. (KNO)
