Abdul Rahman Azad: The voice that refused to fade

The decision by the Kashmir Mutton Dealers Association (KMDA) to suspend fresh livestock imports into Jammu and Kashmir is more than a trade dispute. It is a warning about the vulnerability of the Union Territory’s food supply chain and the urgent need for administrative intervention. Kashmir relies heavily on livestock imports from outside the region to meet its demand for mutton, particularly during wedding seasons, religious gatherings and social functions. Any disruption in this supply chain has immediate consequences for consumers, traders and associated businesses. The KMDA’s warning that shortages could emerge after Muharram should therefore not be taken lightly. The allegations made by traders are serious. Claims of excessive collections, prolonged vehicle stoppages and harassment of transporters in Punjab point to systemic issues that increase costs and cause losses. Livestock transportation is a time-sensitive activity. Delays in extreme summer temperatures can lead to animal deaths, financial losses and reduced supply. If these concerns have indeed persisted for months despite repeated representations, the matter warrants immediate attention from both Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab authorities. At the same time, the current standoff highlights the risks of overdependence on external sources for essential commodities. While resolving the immediate crisis is necessary, policymakers must also focus on long-term solutions. Strengthening local livestock production, improving cold-chain infrastructure and diversifying supply channels can reduce vulnerability to disruptions beyond the Union Territory’s borders. The rehabilitation of supply routes and the resolution of interstate trade bottlenecks should be treated as a priority. Governments exist not only to build infrastructure but also to ensure the smooth movement of goods and services that sustain everyday life. Consumers should not be made to bear the burden of administrative delays. A swift, coordinated response is essential to restore confidence, protect livelihoods and prevent avoidable shortages in the weeks ahead.
