The moral test of power

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB’s) decision to conduct fresh height measurements of candidates selected in the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) department is more than a procedural exercise. It reflects the importance of preserving the credibility of public recruitment and ensuring that appointments are made strictly on merit and in accordance with prescribed eligibility criteria. Recruitment to government services is founded on the principle of equal opportunity. Every candidate who appears for a competitive selection process expects a fair evaluation based on transparent standards. Even a small deviation from established norms can undermine confidence not only in a particular recruitment drive but also in the institutions responsible for conducting it. Investigations into alleged irregularities, therefore, should be viewed as necessary safeguards rather than disruptions. Physical standards such as height are not arbitrary requirements in uniformed services. They are part of the eligibility criteria designed to meet the operational demands of the job. Verifying whether these standards were correctly applied during recruitment is a legitimate exercise, particularly when allegations have prompted a formal investigation. At the same time, fairness must extend to the candidates themselves. Many of those selected have already been serving in different districts for years. They deserve a transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation that avoids unnecessary uncertainty. The process should rely on objective evidence, follow due procedure and ensure that no individual is prejudged before the inquiry reaches its conclusion. The outcome of this exercise will have implications beyond the Fire and Emergency Services Department. It will signal whether accountability mechanisms are capable of correcting irregularities while protecting the rights of honest candidates. Public institutions gain credibility not by claiming perfection but by demonstrating the willingness to investigate complaints and rectify mistakes. Ultimately, integrity in recruitment is essential for building an efficient and trusted civil service. Every appointment must withstand scrutiny because public confidence in government begins with confidence in the fairness of those chosen to serve it.
