Jammu and Kashmir’s government schools have made considerable progress in providing basic amenities, but the latest infrastructure figures expose a gap that cannot be ignored, i.e. the region’s schools are struggling to keep pace with the digital and scientific demands of modern education. With 99.6 per cent of government schools having drinking water and 95.9 per cent equipped with toilets, the basic foundation is relatively strong. However, only 14.8 per cent have functional smart classrooms. Although this is an improvement from 10.6 per cent in 2023-24, the pace remains inadequate at a time when technology is rapidly transforming learning. The digital divide is not merely an infrastructure issue but directly affects students’ exposure to interactive learning, digital resources, emerging technologies and competitive examinations. Students in government schools should not be disadvantaged simply because their institutions lack modern teaching tools. The science infrastructure also warrants urgent attention. Only 62.4 per cent of schools with secondary sections had integrated science laboratories in 2025-26, marginally lower than previous years. Such stagnation is concerning because science education requires practical exposure rather than dependence solely on textbooks. The government must therefore treat digital and scientific infrastructure as an essential component of educational equity. Smart classrooms should be expanded beyond urban centres, with priority given to rural and remote schools. But installation alone will not suffice. Schools need reliable electricity, internet connectivity, trained teachers, technical support and regular maintenance. J&K has demonstrated that near-universal basic amenities are achievable. The next challenge is to ensure that every student receives access to modern learning tools. Bridging this digital and scientific gap is essential for preparing the region’s youth for an increasingly competitive world.
