People fed up with UT status: Dy CM

Srinagar, Aug 15: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Singh Chowdhary on Saturday said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have grown tired of living under Union Territory status and called for restoration of statehood, saying the issue has now reached a point of “beyond tolerance”.
Chowdhary said the restoration of statehood was a clear demand of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed hope that the region would regain its statehood before the next Independence Day.
“People of Jammu and Kashmir have fed up living in a Union Territory and it is beyond tolerance now,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister referred to commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding restoration of statehood, saying those assurances should now be fulfilled.
“Promises have been made by the Prime Minister and Home Minister that statehood would be restored. Statehood must be restored. This is our demand,” Chowdhary said.
He said the restoration of statehood remained an important issue for the elected government and expressed hope that when Jammu and Kashmir celebrates Independence Day next year, it would do so as a state again. [KNT]
