Temperatures dip across J&K after snowfall over higher reaches

Srinagar, Sep 6: Temperatures dipped across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir following a fresh spell of light snowfall over the extreme higher reaches, with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of 14.1°C against the normal 15.2°C.
Detaiks shared by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar as per news agency JKNS stated that, Pahalgam recorded a minimum of 8.4°C against the normal 10.8°C, while Gulmarg recorded 8.0°C against the normal 9.7°C.
While Srinagar, recorded a minimum temperature of 14.1°C against the normal 15.2°C.
Similarly, Kupwara and Kukernag recorded minimum temperatures of 11.7°C and 11.8°C respectively, both below their respective normal values.
In Jammu division, Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 20.8°C, three degrees below the normal of 23.8°C, while Banihal recorded 12.6°C against the normal 15.2°C.
The weather data also showed light rainfall at several stations during the past 24 hours, with Jammu Airport recording the highest rainfall of 17.4 mm. Gulmarg received 7.2 mm, Pahalgam 2.6 mm and Kukernag 1.2 mm.
Meanwhile, light snowfall was reported over the extreme higher reaches, including the mountains around Zojila Pass and Gumri, while snowfall was also reported from the higher reaches of Gulmarg and the adjoining Pir Panjal range.
Snowfall has also been reported from Mahadev Peak, while reports of fresh snowfall have emerged from Kaobal Gali and Tulail Valley. The snowfall remained largely confined to elevations around 3,900 metres and above on Saturday.
Weather observers said on Saturday, snowfall over the extreme higher reaches during short spells is a seasonal indicator associated with the onset of autumn and the gradual withdrawal of the monsoon season.
The second spell of weather activity has now cleared from most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, although a brief spell cannot be ruled out at a few places, particularly during the morning or afternoon hours on Monday.
According to the latest forecast, mostly dry weather is expected to prevail across Jammu and Kashmir till September 12.
Meanwhile, hailstorms accompanied by gusty winds were reported from a few areas of Srinagar and isolated places in other districts during the weather activity on Saturday. (JKNS)
