Kupwara, Sep 28: Five persons, including a 9-year-old child, were killed and eight others injured after a passenger vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a river in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.
An official said that the driver lost control of the vehicle near Seemari Road in Karnah, following which it skidded off the road and plunged into the Kishenganga River.
He said five persons died on the spot, while eight others sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to a Hospital for treatment. “Of the eight injured, six were referred to Srinagar, while two are presently undergoing treatment at SDH Tangdhar,” the official added.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Idrees (32), son of Kaser Din; his 9-year-old daughter Hamza; Sayeed Begum (30), wife of Mohammad Idrees; Shabir Ahmad (70); and Raja Irshad (27), son of Majeed Khan.
The injured have been identified as Sajid Ahmad of Semari; Naveed Ahmad, son of Ghulam Hussain; Mushtaq Ahmad, son of Ghulam Nabi, of Semari; Farhan Khursheed, son of Khursheed Ahmad, of Teetwal; Javid Ahmad of Kadhama; Ashia Begum, wife of Abdul Hameed, of Semari; Ajaz Manzoor, son of Manzoor Ahmad, of Semari; and Shariq, son of Mukhtar Ahmad, of Teetwal.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and said he had directed the District Administration to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. “Deeply pained by the loss of lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kupwara. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured,” the LG wrote on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also expressed deep grief over the tragic road accident at Semari in Karnah-Tangdhar area of Kupwara district, in which five persons lost their lives and several others were injured.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister prayed for peace to the departed souls and strength to the families to bear the irreparable loss.
The Chief Minister directed the district administration and medical authorities to extend the best possible treatment and all necessary medical care to those injured in the accident.
The Chief Minister also directed the concerned authorities to ensure that all possible assistance is extended to the affected families. (KNO)
