Tangmarg, Oct 2: Calling people the “best planners” of sanitation plans, Director General (DG) Rural Sanitation Jammu & Kashmir Anoo Malhotra on Friday called for greater community participation, source segregation and scientific waste processing to build a sustainable sanitation system across the Union Territory.
Speaking at the culmination of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, Malhotra, said people understand their local sanitation requirements best and should have a greater role in planning and implementing sanitation measures.
She said source segregation must remain a key component of the sanitation system, along with effective forward linkages to ensure that segregated waste reaches appropriate processing and disposal facilities.
“Maintaining sanitation assets and strengthening scientific waste processing would be among the priorities of the system going forward,” Malhotra said.
The DG said the department has been undertaking various activities to increase public participation, including youth engagement, community mobilisation and cultural programmes.
She said cleanliness drives should not remain limited to the campaign period and called for sustained community involvement to ensure that the gains achieved during Swachhata Hi Seva are maintained.
“Don’t let this momentum die,” Malhotra urged stakeholders, calling for continued efforts after the culmination of the campaign.
The DG said sustained sanitation outcomes would require coordinated participation from communities, local institutions, youth and other stakeholders, alongside stronger systems for waste segregation, collection and scientific processing. (KNO)
