J&K, Ladakh brace for 400 MWs power paucity

New Delhi, Oct 6: The Union Cabinet on Tuesday passed resolution, marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public leadership highlighting the Centre’s development and security initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir, including the abrogation of Article 370, infrastructure expansion and efforts to strengthen connectivity in the Union Territory.
The resolution said that the decisions taken under Modi’s leadership sought to combine development, national security and greater integration, describing the removal of Article 370 as one of the defining measures of his tenure.
The resolution also cited the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot air strikes and the 2025 Operation Sindoor as examples of the government’s approach to national security.
For Jammu and Kashmir, it placed the Article 370 decision alongside measures such as the creation of the Chief of Defence Staff, implementation of One Rank One Pension, and efforts to combat terrorism while promoting development.
The resolution highlighted the broader infrastructure push under the Modi government, including highway expansion and railway electrification, which have contributed to improved connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
Key projects include major stretches of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, expanded road networks and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. Once fully operational, the rail link is expected to provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. The Chenab Rail Bridge was also highlighted as a flagship engineering project under the connectivity drive.
The resolution further underscored the government’s focus on extending development benefits to previously underserved communities. In J&K, schemes related to housing, drinking water, electricity, banking and welfare delivery have been used to expand access to basic services.
It also referred to efforts to promote investment, manufacturing and self-reliance, noting that public capital expenditure had increased from about Rs 2 lakh crore to over Rs 12 lakh crore.
The Centre has sought to attract investment to J&K through industrial policies and incentives, while identifying tourism, horticulture, handicrafts and food processing as sectors with significant employment and growth potential.
The resolution further highlighted measures to strengthen India’s defence production and national security capabilities, linking them to the government’s response to security challenges.
In the context of J&K, the Centre has maintained that improved security and development are closely interconnected, pointing to a decline in violence in several areas and greater emphasis on infrastructure creation and economic activity. (KNO)
