Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir has enormous potential to generate employment, support local businesses and strengthen the regional economy. However, dependence on traditional peak seasons continues to limit the sector’s opportunities. The plan to introduce a structured annual event calendar and develop new adventure tourism destinations is therefore a welcome step towards making tourism a year-round activity. Planning festivals, cultural programmes and seasonal events well in advance can help attract visitors during months when tourist footfall generally declines. Such a calendar, backed by effective publicity and coordination among departments, would provide tourists with a clearer picture of what Kashmir offers throughout the year. It would also enable tourism stakeholders to plan their services and investments more efficiently. Equally important is the proposed emphasis on adventure tourism. Trekking, paragliding, water sports, skiing and mountaineering can attract younger travellers and visitors seeking experiences beyond conventional sightseeing. Kashmir’s diverse landscape offers considerable scope for these activities, but potential alone cannot guarantee success. Identifying new trekking routes, improving infrastructure and enforcing safety standards must accompany promotional efforts. Adventure tourism requires trained guides, reliable rescue arrangements, suitable equipment and clear safety protocols. Without these essentials, expansion could expose visitors and local operators to avoidable risks. Environmental protection must also remain central to tourism development, particularly in ecologically sensitive mountain areas. The annual event calendar should be more than a list of proposed activities. It must include clear timelines, departmental responsibilities, sustained publicity and mechanisms to assess results. Local artists, cultural organisations, tour operators, hoteliers and small businesses should be involved so that the benefits reach communities across the region. Extending the tourist season will require consistent planning rather than occasional initiatives. By combining cultural events, seasonal attractions and responsibly managed adventure activities, Jammu and Kashmir can reduce its dependence on a narrow tourism window. The objective should be a resilient tourism economy that creates livelihoods throughout the year while preserving the natural and cultural heritage that makes Kashmir distinctive.
