The full booking of cold storage facilities across Kashmir this season reflects both encouraging demand for the Valley’s apples and a growing effort among orchardists to secure better returns for their produce. For thousands of families dependent on horticulture, the ability to store apples and release them when market conditions are favourable can make a significant difference to household incomes. Traditionally, growers have faced considerable pressure during the peak harvesting season, when large quantities of apples arrive in markets simultaneously, often pushing prices down. Cold storage provides an opportunity to avoid distress sales and distribute supplies over a longer period. Encouraging demand this year has further raised expectations among growers who have invested in preserving their produce. However, storage alone cannot guarantee higher returns. The additional expenses of packaging, transportation and storage charges must be recovered through improved market prices. Moreover, the quality of fruit remains crucial. As operators have pointed out, damaged or poorly graded apples cannot be made marketable simply by placing them in controlled storage. Proper sorting, grading and handling must therefore become an essential part of the post-harvest process. The experience of last season, when transportation disruptions and heavy market arrivals affected growers, underlines the need for a more dependable horticulture support system. Kashmir’s apple economy cannot remain vulnerable to seasonal bottlenecks and uncertain transportation arrangements. The government must treat the growing demand for cold storage as an opportunity to strengthen post-harvest infrastructure. Expanding modern storage facilities, improving road and rail connectivity, introducing better grading systems and facilitating access to organised markets can help orchardists negotiate better prices. Apple cultivation sustains a substantial rural economy in Jammu and Kashmir. Ensuring remunerative returns to growers is therefore not merely an agricultural concern but an economic necessity. Cold storage offers hope; sustained institutional support must turn that hope into lasting prosperity.
