Bijbehara, May 18: An elderly man drowned to death in river Jhelum at Natipora area of Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The elderly man drowned when he was performing ablution in the afternoon.
An official said that an elderly man identified as Ghulam Rasool Shah (75), of Natipora, Sangam slipped into river Jhelum and drowned while he was performing ablution for prayers.
“He left some clothes and sleepers on the bank of river,” the official said, adding that soon after the incident, locals and police rushed to the spot and immediately launched searches to rescue him.
However, after hectic efforts, the locals and police retrieved the body of the deceased from the river.
