The mauling of a four-year-old girl at central Kashmir’s Budgam district has left every citizen including the government shocked. The toddler went missing on June 02 while her body parts were found on June 03 at Ompora Budgam. The people across the Valley expressed solidarity with the bereaved family while the government immediately suspended the concerned Range Officer for dereliction of his duties. After the incident took place, the leopard as per the reports were spotted at two more places in the district, thus creating panic among the masses, who appealed the concerned wildlife department to launch a hunt to capture the leopards spotted there. In the meantime, it has been again reported that two leopard cubs have been captured alive in Budgam district today. Spotted by the villagers, the wildlife department has finally shifted the two cubs to Dachigam. However, one fails to understand why the presence of leopards has increased in the district, which indeed is risking the lives of people. There is a need to probe the matter as well as the government should direct the concerned officials to ensure that the whole district is safe and all the leopards spotted there will be captured alive and taken to the safer place so that the lives of people are protected. The lives matter and thus the action must be taken well on time.
