Kulgam, Jun 21: Residents of Kanjikulla village of Yaripora Tehsil in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday said that in times of Covid-19 pandemic, they are without drinking water for one month while the concerned department has failed to address the issue.
The residents of the village said they are being forced to fetch the water from nearby streams which exposes them to the threat of getting infected with waterborne disease.
“We were getting piped water from a spring located in the neighbouring village. However, the water of a local canal was mixing with the spring water due to which dozens of people fell ill in the area,” they said.
Locals said that the water pipes going through the canal have leakage due to which the contaminated water gets mixed with the drinking water.
“Over a month has passed but the concerned department has failed to take any concrete step in this regard due to which locals of the area are suffering a lot,” they said.
Ishtiyak Ahmad, a local resident, said that the village which comprises of over 300 households are without drinking water for over a month, while Jal Shakti department is paying no heed to their pleas.
The residents of the area have urged the higher officials of the Jal Shakti department to take immediate steps and replace leaking pipes.
Despite repeated attempts, concerned Executive Engineer, Assistant Executive Engineer and JE weren’t available to comment on the issue.
