Kupwara, Sep 18: Stating that the security forces are working for a peaceful atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, the UT’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh Saturday said that the attacks taking place in Kashmir reflect the frustration of the neighbouring country as the top militant leadership stands wiped-out of the region.
He also said that the local militant recruitment has reduced considerably and the youth are preferring sports and other courses as their career. DGP stated this while talking to reporters on the side-lines of his visit to the border district of Kupwara where he reviewed the security situation and also paid a visit to slain sub-inspector Arshid Mir’s home. Arshid was a native of Kupwara district. Arshid was killed in a militant attack in Khanyar area of Srinagar a few days ago.
“A couple of days back, one of our policemen (Arshid) was killed in a militant attack in Srinagar while performing duty. We are proud of his sacrifice but at the same time all of us are deeply saddened by the incident. We stand by his family members in this hour of grief”, the DGP said.
The DGP said that he has assured justice to the people of Kupwara stating that those involved in the killing of Arshid will be brought to justice soon.
The J&K police chief said that security forces are fighting against militancy will continue.
“We want peace to prevail so that people can live in a peaceful atmosphere and with prosperity. Efforts to keep peace intact are underway,” he said.
About the militant attacks despite security agencies claiming the violence graph had reduced considerably in Kashmir, the DGP said: “Both police and the security forces make claims based on facts and figures which is the result of successful counter militancy operations. Let me tell you that the top militant leadership of all outfits stands wiped out and the overall militancy related violence graph has come to a low.”
He said that it was out of the frustration from our neighbouring country that militants are carrying out attacks. “One policeman of the class-4 level was killed yesterday besides a non local laborer was also shot dead by militants’ ‘, he said, adding that which religion allows attacks on unarmed people.
He said that the overall situation is getting more peaceful compared to the previous years but the enemies of peace aren’t happy with the peaceful atmosphere in the region.
About the local militant recruitment, the DGP said that the graph has not increased but reduced considerably as youth are acting wisely. “We want the youth to focus on their career and not to indulge in any unnecessary activity. Today, youth are preferring sports and other fields as their career,” he said.
Regarding the presence of militants and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) in north Kashmir, the DGP said that it’s not necessary to disclose the figure this time. “The fact is that the number of OGWs is half compared to previous figure,” he said, adding that no local militant is active in the Kupwara, Baramulla, and Sopore districts but there may be some activity from other ends. “Barring Sumbal area of Bandipora district, no militant is active in the northern belt of Kashmir,” he said. “Expect Sopore and Sumbal there is no militant active in north Kashmir.”—(KNO)
