Achan, a dumping site for Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) here in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir has turned out to be a nuisance for the people living close to the place. The foul smell has left the people aghast against the SMC for not creating the concrete steps to put an end to the foul smell coming out of the dumping site. It is notable to mention here that the garbage being collected from across the Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of SMC is being dumped in the place. The people believe that the stench is affecting their health for which they state the officials of the SMC are responsible. There has been a growing demand from people, seeking relocation of the dumping site to the city outskirts; however, the same demand has been trashed by the SMC stating that it is the only site they can utilize. One fails to understand why the people living close to the area are being pushed to the wall and why their demands are being ignored at a time when the dumping of garbage is affecting their health. Having said so, the SMC, while we understand its constraints, needs to take care of the garbage in a scientific manner so that it does not make the life of people living near the site hell. The concerned should take immediate steps in this regard to put an end to the sufferings of the people living close to the place.
