The fatal road accidents seems to have gained pace in Jammu and Kashmir as the frequent reports about the accidents, which claim the lives of many commuters are being published by the section of media, thus indicating a loophole in the road safety. Several statements have come up by the administration or the previous successive regimes so far with regard to curbing the number of accidents. However, the situation from ensuring better results has remained confined to expressing grief over the loss of lives and also appealing for the compensations. It is unfortunate that despite claiming high and tall, the administration has so far failed to curb the rising number of road accidents on Jammu and Kashmir roads, especially on Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road connecting the Valley with the rest of the States. On Saturday, three persons including a soldier lost their lives in the road accidents, which took place in Udhampur and Srinagar while over half a dozen people sustained injuries. On February 03, six persons travelling in a vehicle along the national highway were killed when they met with an accident. These figures indicate no decline in the road accidents and fatalities due to it. Curbing the rinsing road accidents is the responsibility of both- the government as well as the people. Therefore, the time has come when the steps should be taken to seize the number of accidents and prevent the roads from claiming lives further. It is a much-needed time when the authorities instead of focusing on number plates and other related things should only take measures that would prevent the deadly accidents from happening and the precious lives of people are protected.
