The hustle bustle ahead of the Muslim festival, Eid-ul-Fitr, has started across the Valley, which has resulted in increase in the rush of vehicular movement in the busiest markets, especially in the commercial hub Lal Chowk where traffic congestion has been witnessed in the past couple of days. The flow of vehicles usually increase ahead of the festivals here and thus puts responsibility on the concerned authorities to ensure the smooth passage to the commuters. However, it has been witnessed that the traffic norm violations have increased in Srinagar and the recent figures that came to the fore suggest that seven lakh people have been fined for violating the traffic norms with an aim to create a traffic sense among the commuters and put an end to the violations. Nonetheless, the action against the traffic norm violations can never bring a solution to the issue, but there is a need to come up with the better facilities and infrastructure to help the commuters in following the traffic rules. In this regard, there is a need to come up with adequate number of parking slots, which is the need of the hour and would certainly help in reducing the violations with regard to illegal car parking. Besides, the government should also consider decongest the roads where the frequent traffic congestion is taking place and leave the commuters to lurch at large. Moreover, ahead of the holy festival, the concerned departments should work in tandem to come up with alternative measures so that the shoppers could heave a sigh of relief and also they would buy essentials without any hesitation. The alternative steps are the need of the hour as it would help in reducing the traffic congestion on the Eid eve.
