Kupwara, May 5: The residents of Awathkul village in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district staged a massive protest against the authorities for their failure to repair the road which is in a bad condition since many years.
The protesters blocked the Keran-Kralpora road for some time which caused traffic movement to halt for several hours.
The protesters said that the entire road stretch which connects scores of Kupwara villages has not been repaired since long with the result, the potholes have widened, and transporters are finding it hard to ply vehicles on the road stretch.
They said that the government had failed to repair and macadamise the road, affecting a large population. “Even as the villagers staged protests many times to highlight the grievance but no action was taken in this regard till date,” Shabir Ahmad one of the protester said.
During rainy days, he said, it becomes almost impossible to even to walk on this road with the result that students are unable to go to the schools during bad weather.
Meanwhile, the protesters appealed to authorities to look into their grievances so that they will not face inconvenience. Later a team of officials from civil administration and police reached the spot and assured the protestors that their issues will be addressed after they dispersed peacefully.
