Anantnag, May 10: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in an encounter at Kreeri area of Dooru belt in southern Anantnag district, police said Tuesday.
A police official said that acting on a specific information about the presence of militants, a joint cordon was laid by police and the army in Dooru area Anantnag. “As the joint teams zeroed in on the suspected spot, the militants fired indiscriminately at the forces, triggering an encounter. In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved,” the official said.
Talking to reporters in Srinagar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that on the basis of a specific lead, army’s 19 RR and police laid a siege at Dooru area about the presence of three LeT militants. “This operation is very important for us as it was the same group that had managed to flee on April 16 at Watnar in which one soldier was killed. Secondly, the encounter took place on the highway close to the Yatra route and this way, a revenge has been taken and a threat averted,” he said.
He said in the encounter, two militants have been killed and there is a possibility of the presence of a third one. “Search operation is on,” the IGP said, adding that the identity of the slain is being ascertained.
Asked about the operations being taking place on the Yatra routes, he said that security forces have intensified the anti-militancy operations along the Yatra route to ensure smooth pilgrimage. “The Yatra routes are safe and will be safer in the days ahead,” he said, adding that all threats of militants to disrupt the pilgrimage will be foiled.
