Srinagar, May 13: The filtration plant in Ukhoo village of Kakapora belt of south Kashmir’s Pulwama has been out of order for the last 12 years, forcing the locals to drink contaminated water.
They said that a water supply scheme as well as a water filtration plant was set up by the Jal Shakti Department in the village in 2006 and it was inaugurated by then MLA Pampore Zahoor Ahmed Mir. But the filtration plant has been defunct for the last 12 years and people drink contaminated water often leading to health issues.
They said they protested in this regard several times to no avail as the department has failed to start the filtration plant “We brought the issue into the notice of the concerned higher ups several times. But so far nothing has been done,” said Tabassum Banoo, a local Sarpanch.
Locals requested concerned authorities to look into the matter at an earliest and restore the filtration plant so that people don’t have to face issues.
An official of the department said the plant suffered severe damages during 2014 floods
He said that work has been started for restoring the plant and it will be completed by the end of this year.
