The people living around Choont Koul in Gow Kadal area of Srinagar are anguished over the present condition of the water body, which was once famous and people living nearby used to consume the water flowing through it. The rivulet that connects with river Jhelum at Gow Kadal has turned into Achan as the heaps of garbage; especially plastic bottles, polythene and other things could be seen in the water body. Such is the situation that the locals are now complaining that the foul smell is emanating from the rivulet here, thus making their lives miserable and also jeopardizing their health as well. The concerned authorities multiple times claimed to take steps to clean the rivulet and ensure that the water body is preserved for the future generation, but the present condition is giving a different indication and the people are of the opinion that the water body is seemingly at the verge of extinction as the authorities have miserably failed to take immediate and necessary steps for the preservation of the rivulet. The time has gone when the water flowing through the rivulet was being used for drinking purposes and also washing clothes as the people don’t even bother to go closer to the water given the deteriorating condition of the rivulet. There is a need to come up with the necessary preservative measures so that the cleanliness is ensured in the rivulet and is preserved for the future generations.
