DC Srinagar reviews measures for smooth traffic flow on City roads

Srinagar, May 26: In order to review the measures to ensure smooth traffic flow on City roads and to formulate an action plan to overcome traffic Jam on city Roads, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad Thursday chaired a meeting in the Meeting hall of DC Office Complex, here.
The meeting held threadbare discussion on various issues with regard to management of traffic system in Srinagar including roadside encroachments, unregulated operation of street vending and nuisance of wrong parking.
On the occasion, the DC directed the officers to devise an effective mechanism to ensure better traffic regulation in the city particularly at heavy traffic load junctions including Jehangir Chowk, Batamaloo, Dalgate, M.A Road, Sonwar, HSHS, Ikhwan Chowk, Hawal, Soura and other highly congested routes. He also stressed on hassle-free movement of Ambulances and other vehicles required to reach destination in a time bound manner.
The DC directed the authorities to conduct a massive and intensified enforcement drive against roadside encroachments and wrong parking in Srinagar City particularly at prominent places including outside the major City hospitals for visible improvement in traffic system.
The DC directed the SMC authorities to relocate street vendors from heavy traffic junction points which hinder smooth traffic ply and cause traffic chaos and congestion. He also directed for keeping check on unregulated operations of street vendors particularly at heavy rush junction points.
He stressed on the concerned officers to take all required measures to decongest the City roads to ensure smooth flow of traffic. He also directed to keep the provision of adequate parking spaces in crowded places and relocation of the roadside vendors to facilitate hassle-free movement of pedestrians.
The DC also stressed that civic sense and driving sense is imperative in better traffic management and appealed to all stakeholders to put in collective efforts to overcome traffic jams and decongest Srinagar City for smooth traffic regulation.
The DC said it is multi agency efforts and directed SMC authorities, ARTO, Traffic and Police department to work in close coordination and act tough against traffic rules violators, who cause a lot of inconvenience to common people.
During the meeting, representatives of various Transport Associations also put forth their suggestions with regard to streamlining of traffic management system.
The DC asked them to ensure a better and reliable public transport system to the people so that they prefer public transport over their own/ private means of transportation.
Besides, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Dr Syed Haneef Balkhi and SSP Traffic Police, Muzafar Ahmad, the meeting was attended by Joint Commissioner SMC, Secretary Srinagar Development Authority, ARTO, Tehsildar Headquarter, besides Officers from other concerned departments. While representatives of various Transport Associations also participated in the meeting.
