From charity to community power: Why 2.5 per cent giving model deserves serious adoption

The tragic incident at the lower Amarnath cave has shocked everyone across the country while the people from different parts have expressed grief over the loss of lives and prayed for the speedy recovery to the injured persons. In the meantime, the steps and measures taken by the Jammu and Kashmir administration are quite appreciable and needs to be commended at all platforms. In a short span of time, it is literally not possible to start a massive rescue operation after the incident that has been launched in J&K. The men from all the agencies including Army, J&K Police, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, BSF and others were pressed into the service to evacuate the injured and transport the bodies of the deceased. Everything from men to machinery was kept in a ready mode and helped in saving many lives in the aftermath of the incident. The health department had kept adequate arrangements as besides 28 doctors, over 90 paramedical staff was kept ready at the base hospital for the pilgrims, which indicated that adequate measures were taken for the smooth conduct of the yatra. The readiness from the government side needs to be applauded and the health care providers including doctors as well as the paramedical staff need to be congratulated for doing a tremendous work and saving the lives of many. Such incidents are unfortunate but can happen anywhere. Keeping in view such tragedies, the government should always keep ready the men and machinery to save lives and ensure better facilities to the people.
