The open drainage in the middle of the roads always pose a great risk to the lives of the people as several such incidents have taken place where some persons fell into it, especially when the roads remained submerged in the aftermath of the heavy rainfall. Last year in October, a man died after he slipped into an under-construction drain in the Harnambal area of Natipora, Srinagar. The elderly man due to the slippery path amid unfavourable weather conditions slipped into the under-construction drain and later died. In one similar incident Thursday, a man had a narrow escape after his vehicle fell into an under-construction drain at Khanyar area of Srinagar. The work on the drainage system in the locality is going on at present and at the same time, the heavy rainfall submerged the road following which the commuter couldn’t identify the spot where the drainage was open. The open drainages are risking the lives of people and seemingly during the work, the concerned authorities don’t take steps to ensure that the movement of public is restricted which lead to such incidents. One fails to understand why the sign board is not being erected or why the road is not being blocked at the entry and the exit points during the drainage work. It is imperative to take such steps while executing the work and therefore, the concerned authorities should ensure that all such mandatory measures are taken to prevent the loss of human lives and also prevent such incidents in the future.
