Growing population, growing challenges

Overloading, over speeding and violation of extant traffic rules are leading to the fatal road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir, especially along the Srinagar-Jammu highway. The deaths reported along the highway have remained a cause of concern for one and all, especially the people at the helm of affairs. But, one needs to understand that until and unless the major and grave traffic rule violations are not put to an end, the fatalities would possibly continue to increase on the major highway in the Union Territory. Amidst the concerns, the district administration Ramban along with a team from the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) jointly conducted checking of the vehicles on the Jammu- Srinagar National Highway. The team checked the vehicles for overloading, over speeding, and violation of extant traffic rules. During the checking, it has come to the fore that 50 vehicles have been booked for violation of traffic rules in the last 6 days in the district. The checking and fining of the traffic norm violators is mandatory at this juncture as such initiatives would help in reducing the number of fatal road accidents along the busy highway. It is imperative to penalize the traffic violators on a daily basis along the highway so that the violation is put to an immediate end and the number of road accidents is reduced. Besides, the authorities concerned while acting against the violators, should also advise the passengers to check the condition of the vehicle and other necessary documents before starting their journey.
