GMC Srinagar lacks Robotic Surgical System

Srinagar, Jan 19: Government Medical College Srinagar lacks Robotic Surgical System for which patients are forced to visit outside J&K.
Robot-assisted surgery uses specialized technology that enhances the capabilities of surgeon. It allows surgeon to perform procedures in hard-to-reach areas through small incisions. The specialized technology also enables precise movements and enhanced magnification.
Several doctors said that Robotic Surgical System is need of the hour at GMC Srinagar as it is has multiple benefits during surgical procedures.
Dr Sajad Nazir Head of Department Urology Department at GMC Srinagar said that department has seen lot of people visiting urological related problems in the last few years due to the quality and latest technology based procedures. Earlier, patients would go outside the state for such procedures.
The department started Kidney transplantation last year and now it lacks Robotic surgeries for which patients have to go outside the state, he said.
Prof (Dr) Syed Sajjad Nazir has done fellowship in Robotic surgeries in 2018 from one of the best centres of the world Rosewell park Cancer institute USA while many other faculty members also had hands-on experience in robotic surgery in India during their training.
The department had already submitted the demand of Robotic equipment since 2019 and even tenders where floated by JKMSCL but due to some technical issues it didn’t mature till now, Dr Sajad said.
He said that presently the best results for urological malignancies are treated with Robotic surgeries in the entire world as the Robotic surgeries have been beneficial to Urological related Cancers worldwide and hence it’s acceptance in Urology, he said. Dr Sajjad along with his department requested the government for procuring the Robotic equipment which will place GMC Srinagar at par with other top rated institutes of the country.
He said that one of the main advantages of robotic surgery is that it enables surgery through smaller incisions besides greater precision, better visualization and ability to do surgery inside the body.
