Srinagar, Feb 10: On Friday, special prayers were held in all of the valley’s major mosques, shrines, and Imambarahs, including the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar, for those who died in the tragic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.
At the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, Imam Hai Moulana Ahmad Saeed Naqshbandi prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and the quick recovery of those injured and expressed his solidarity and compassion for the people of Turkey and Syria.
Aga Syed Mujtuba Abbas, General Secretary J&K Anjuman-E- Sharie Shian said that special prayers were organized for Turkey and Syrian earthquake victims at all major Imambarahs of the valley on Friday.
“During Friday prayers we expressed our heartfelt sympathies and solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria and prayed for the victims who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake”, he said.
The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria four days ago has surpassed 21,000, according to the latest data released by authorities and rescuers.
The powerful earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria this week are among the most devastating and deadliest quakes in recent history.
As a result of the powerful shocks, thousands of buildings were destroyed. In addition to the growing death toll, tens of thousands of injuries have been reported, while many people are believed to be still trapped beneath the debris.
The casualties in Turkey and Syria this week surpassed those in Japan’s Fukushima disaster in 2011, when a Magnitude 9.0 earthquake unleashed a wave that killed almost 18,400 people.
