Growing population, growing challenges

Amid the government’s claim about reducing the number of road accidents, the administration in Srinagar has miserably failed to erect sign boards and ensure proper zebra crossing in Srinagar, which can play a key role in reducing the number of accidents in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. There is hardly any place in Srinagar where a proper sign board is erected by the authorities concerned. It is unfortunate that the authorities have even failed to erect sign board outside the schools, thereby risking the lives of little school-going children. One fails to understand when such lethargy is put to an end and who is going to set things in the right direction. It is pivotal to have a number of sign boards across Srinagar to prevent the fatal road accidents. The seriousness in reducing the number of accidents can be gauged only through such issues as these measures are pivotal and mandatory for curbing the road accidents. This comes at a time when the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha was told in a meeting that 3104 speed limit signages have also been erected since April 2022. Moreover, Srinagar and other parts of the Valley are the only place where the people use to cross the road without following the set norms as there is the absence of zebra crossing everywhere and the concerned administration is not taking proper care in this regard, which is jeopardizing the lives of people. There is a need to take measures and ensure that the road accidents are put to an immediate end and the precious lives are saved with the help of these mandatory sign boards and other related facilities.
