Sopore, Apr 18: The residents of Khankah Mohalla in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday complained that they are without drinking water for the last couple of weeks, and alleged that the concerned department was least bothered about their problem.
The resident of Khankah Mohalla said they are facing acute water scarcity and are drinking unhygienic water.
“There is no drinking water in our area and we are being compelled to fetch raw water from river Jhelum. This contaminated water is unhygienic and poses a health risk,” said Junaid Peer, a local.
As the Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching, there is more consumption of water, he said, adding, “We have been moving from pillar to post to get this genuine demand redressed but to no avail. The concerned department is making no effort to ease our difficulties.”
The locality has the famous Khankah mosque where thousands of Muslims in and around Sopore come to offer prayers, but the lack of water supply is causing great problems for them, said another local.
The locals said if the issue of water shortage in the area is not addressed at the earliest, they will hit the roads.
