Anantnag, Jun 21: Govt Medical College Anantnag (GMC) added one more achievement by performing successful thoracotomy surgery at MMABM Hospital Janglatmandi in Anantnag.
The GMC’s Department of General Surgery alongside the Anesthesia department successfully carried out the first ever surgery of a hydatid cyst in the lung.
A doctor, who was part of the team, said that a patient with recurrent episodes of cough, fever and chest pain was found to be having large hydatid lung disease.
The patient was operated upon via right posterolateral thoracotomy technique with enucleation of the cyst followed by capitonnage, he said.
The surgery was conducted by Dr Mohammad Amin Rather, CVTS surgeon, assisted by Dr Manzoor and Dr Rayees. Anaesthesia team was led by Dr Zafar Malik, Associate Professor Dept of Anesthesia.
The patient is doing fine in the immediate postoperative period, he said.
Thoracotomy procedures and lung surgeries have been lately stated in GMC Anantnag otherwise such patients used to be shifted to SKIMS.
Principal GMC Anantnag, Dr (Prof) Tariq Syed Qureshi congratulated the team for the feat.
Hydatid disease or cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic infection caused by a tapeworm. It can cause cysts to grow in the liver and other organs. The infection is common in rural, underdeveloped areas where people raise livestock.
