Shopian, Jul 15: Several villages in south Kashmir’s Shopian district complain that they are facing drinking water problems for a long time.
The people from Reshinagri, Jamnagri, Shamsipora, Ramnagri, Amshipora, Gadipora, Poshama, Megnipora, Dangerpora and its adjacent areas said that the government is resorting to dilly-dallying tactics in providing a proper water supply to them.
“We are getting water from an open reservoir at Reshnagri without any filtration,” they said, adding that the Jal Shakti Department is putting their lives at risk.
Shakeel Ahmad, a local, said even there are hundreds of households that aren’t even getting even the raw water.
He said the work on the filtration plant was started a long time ago but it is not being properly monitored. There isn’t any positive development on the ground, he said.
The locals said the government had to revise its plan as in the earlier plan, they had kept 12-inch pipe for just 1.5 km while the actual length is around 3.5 km. “If the pipeline will be laid, all households will get at least raw water as of now till the filtration plant will be completed,” they said.
They requested the administration to direct the executive agencies to expedite the work on the filtration plant and install the pipeline at the earliest.
The concerned DDC member Tahir Ahmad Mir also requested the concerned authorities to complete the scheme so that locals can heave a sigh of relief.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer Jal Shakti Department Shopian Abdul Rashid said that work on the filtration plant is going on under proper monitoring of the concerned officials.
He said the department is on its toes to complete the plant as soon as possible.
