There are still many families in Jammu and Kashmir, who don’t have their own house and still live either in pegged tents or in the tin sheds, which indicates their poor situation as well as the deprivation from the basic rights so far in the Union Territory. However, the administration led by Lieutenant Governor has set a deadline of 2024 to ensure zero poverty as well as housing for all in Jammu and Kashmir, which shows the seriousness of the government in ensuring benefits to one and all. Many cases of bungling and scams have been witnessed in the past in the name of poverty, but it seems that the time has gone and there will be a new dawn for the poor, who have been pushed to the wall, by not giving them the proper rights under the different government schemes. In the recent past, the government has been able to retrieve the land from the people allotted to them under different schemes and interestingly, most of the land was retrieved from the elite class, which shows that the rights of the poor were being snatched by the erstwhile government from time to time. However, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme has brought smiles on the faces of poor people, who fall in the list of those, who will be given the land and houses, to uplift them and put an end to their poverty and also a roof over their head.
