The drive against the drivers without crash helmets here in Srinagar was seemingly a day-long show as 24 drivers were taken to the task on a single day following which no action has been taken by the authorities concerned against the two-wheeler riders in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. The initiative to suspend the licenses of the drivers without crash helmets was a unique in nature would have helped in ensuring obeying of law on the ground, but unfortunately the drive could not sustain for a long as the officials from Regional Transport Office (RTO) Kashmir here didn’t came out on the roads to check the violations of the mandatory traffic norms, giving an impression that the authorities are not serious in ensuring that norms are followed in letter and spirit. One fails to understand why there has been delay in launching a massive drive in this regard to make sure that all the violators are taken to the task. As the road accidents have claimed many precious lives so far, especially those who were found without wearing crash helmets on the two-wheelers, there is a need to ensure stringent measures in this regard so that the bikers, scooty riders would follow the law and thus subsequently help in saving the precious lives. It is the time when the authorities should take a decision in this regard and come up with a massive drive to ensure that all the motorists follow the traffic norms in letter and spirit, which would help in reducing the number of fatal accidents on the roads.
