The power scenario in Jammu and Kashmir might have irked the consumers across the Union Territory for the past over a month, but the government at the same time has been making efforts to ensure round-the-clock electricity here. On October 18, 2023, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, approved the project on Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-II – Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for 13 GW Renewable Energy Project in Ladakh. The project will also be connected to the Leh-Alesteng-Srinagar line to provide clean energy to J&K. The government has stated 13 GW Renewable Energy Project will greatly benefit Jammu & Kashmir, apart from other parts of the country. The 13 GW RE projects are equipped with 12 GW Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) which will ensure round the clock power supply to J&K, based on the capacity of the transmission system laid between Ladakh and Kashmir. Such measures generate hopes of adequate power availability in Jammu & Kashmir. At this juncture, there is a need to ensure that the projects approved by the Government of India (GoI) are utilized in a good manner and make sure that there is no delay in completing the projects so that the people across the Union Territory will get the benefits. It is the time when the UT administration needs to grab the opportunity and ensure that the motive behind the initiatives taken by the central government for the wellbeing of the people of Jammu & Kashmir is achieved.
