Ganderbal, Oct 28: Sonamarg, the world-famous tourist destination, is buzzing with activity this summer, drawing in a significant number of tourists. Local hoteliers and traders are elated, anticipating even more visitors during the winter months.
They hailed the government’s decision to keep the resort accessible during winter, saying this has added to the excitement, and tourists are enjoying the scenic beauty of the area.
Traditionally, Sonamarg remains closed to traffic during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, especially along the road from Gagangeer area to Sonamarg. However, with the near completion of the Z-Morh Tunnel, bypassing avalanche-prone areas, the administration is gearing up to keep Sonamarg accessible throughout the winter season. Various departments are actively involved, ensuring essential infrastructure like electricity and water supply.
Local residents have welcomed this initiative, especially hoteliers and traders. Tourists from different parts of the country and even some international groups are currently enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Sonamarg, often referred to as the “Meadow of Gold”.
Tourists here hailed the warm hospitality of the locals and the cooperation of traders and hoteliers. Many returning tourists said that they noted significant improvements in infrastructure and roads after a gap of several years, saying this has made their experience more enjoyable.
Once Sonamarg opens its doors to tourists during winters, it is expected to not only boost the local economy but also provide relief to populations residing in various villages that typically migrate for extended periods during the harsh winter months.
