Baramulla, Dec 30: North Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded 364 fire incidents this year, causing extensive damage worth crores of rupees, according to officials.
A top official from the Fire and Emergency Department revealed that the fire incidents resulted in property damage amounting to 10 crores. Two firemen sustained injuries during firefighting operations throughout the year.
“In 2023, a total of 364 fire incidents were reported across Baramulla district, causing extensive damage amounting to Rs 10,04,50,000,” Mir Arif, Deputy Director, F&ES headquarters Sopore, said. He added that two firemen were injured during firefighting operations. However, there were no casualties or injuries to civilians.
The Deputy Director said the primary cause of these incidents was electric short circuits, with a notable decrease in the number of incidents compared to the previous year.
Mir said there are 15 Fire and Emergency stations in Sopore’s command headquarters, manned by a total of 171 personnel who are dedicated to tackling fire challenges during challenging times.
“In 2022, Baramulla district witnessed 406 fire incidents, resulting in four fatalities and damage to at least 240 structures, causing losses in crores,” he added.
Officials from the F&ES said local fire-fighting units have been on the front lines, tirelessly combating flames and displaying commendable bravery in the face of danger. Their swift response and dedication have been crucial in mitigating the impact of these incidents, he said.
He said the department has been engaging in several measures to reduce the graph of fire incidents including public awareness about the cautious use of electronic gadgets especially during the winter months.
The officials urged the people to remain vigilant and prioritise fire safety measures and advised them to install smoke detectors on every level of the home, ensure the availability of fire extinguishers, besides create an evacuation plan to be used in case of an emergency.
He also advised them to avoid overloading power outlets with multiple devices, not to leave open flames unattended and delay in reporting the hazards.
By adhering to these recommendations, the people can contribute to a safer living environment for all, as these serve as a critical reminder that individual’s actions play a pivotal role in maintaining their safety, they said.
