Budgam, Dec 29: To safeguard the centuries-old culture and tradition of Sozni Topi making, Waragam village in central Kashmir’s Budgam confronts challenges while seeking assistance from the administration.
Waragam, nestled in the Beerwah tehsil, has been a beacon for preserving the art of Sozni Topi making, an integral cultural asset of the Kashmir valley.
Artisans said that they have inherited this art from their ancestors, and they are committed to continuing this tradition. They highlighted the economic importance of the Sozni work, saying they want this art form to sustain for future generations.
Sozni Topi finds favour among the elite and those embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage. With prices ranging from 4000 to 20,000 rupees, these finely crafted caps carry not just a monetary value but a rich cultural significance.
“We buy all the raw material from Srinagar, and then artisans use their traditional designs and skills to craft these topis,” one of the artisans shared. He shed light on the meticulous process involved in creating each piece.
Despite the historical preference for this traditional cap among Kashmiris, preserving this art is becoming increasingly challenging. Villagers said the livelihood of many families in Waragam depends on this craft.
“Beyond tradition, this art is our identity. We urge the administration to support us to ensure the continuity of Sozni Topi craftsmanship,” another artisan said.
