Anantnag, Apr 19: The Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has achieved a significant milestone in uro-oncological care with the successful completion of a radical cystoprostatectomy.
Led by senior urologist Dr Zahoor Ahmad Gilkar, along with Dr Malik Suhail and a dedicated technical team, GMC Anantnag performed a groundbreaking procedure on a 65-year-old patient diagnosed with Ca Urinary bladder, the hospital management said.
The patient, who had previously undergone endoscopic resection of the tumour (TURBT), was found to have a high-grade invasive bladder cancer. Dr Nazir Ahmad Wani, Head of the Department of Surgery, provided supervision and guidance to the team throughout the procedure.
Traditionally, cases of this complexity would require referrals to esteemed institutions like SKIMS Soura or speciality hospitals for radical cystoprostatectomy. However, the skilled team at GMC Anantnag, equipped with unparalleled expertise and state-of-the-art facilities, embraced the challenge, marking a significant milestone in local healthcare, the hospital said, adding that the comprehensive surgery, encompassing both TURBT and radical cystectomy, lasted approximately 5-6 hours.
Dr Zahoor Ahmad Gilkar commended the invaluable support of the anaesthesia team, led by Dr Anjum, whose expertise was instrumental in the success of the procedure.
Prof Dr Anjum Farhana, Principal of GMC Anantnag, praised the exemplary performance of the team, highlighting the institution’s commitment to delivering tertiary care services of the highest standard, meeting and exceeding the public’s expectations.
Dr Muzaffar Ahmad Sherwani, Medical Superintendent AH GMC Anantnag, extended heartfelt congratulations to the team and ensured seamless logistical support throughout the procedure.
“This groundbreaking achievement reflects GMC Anantnag’s unwavering dedication to advancing medical care, setting a new standard for urological interventions in the region,” the hospital management said.
