Srinagar, May 14: Showing peoples’ power, the local youth of Achenambal-Zafran Colony, Srinagar Tuesday contributed money from their own pockets to repair the vitral road stretch connecting Zafran Colony with Pampore as the authorities failed to do the same since past over two decades.
Frustrated by the administration’s continuous neglect, the youth of Achenambal, Zafran Colony, decided to collect money from all the residents with youth of the area contributing large amount to arrange overguage metal, dust and other material to repair the road stretch that was causing huge inconvenience to the general public including women and school going children.
Mohammad Yousuf, a resident of Zafran Colony, said that they have been raising concerns about the poor condition of this road for two decades but their pleas always fell on the deaf ears.
“The authorities have consistently neglected this vital lifeline for the community, forcing us to endure hazardous conditions on a daily basis. With no signs of relief from the government, we the residents, primarily youth, have now repaired this road on our own,” he said.
Another resident, Tahir Ahmed, said that despite having such big names like R&B, nothing was done to repair the road here. “Elderly and youth visited the R&B offices ample times but to get hollow promises only. Today, youth decided to show peoples’ power and contributed money from their own pockets to repair the road,” he said.
A local youth involved in the repair efforts voiced the anger of the community, stating that it is a matter of safety for everyone, especially for pedestrians and commuters who use this road regularly to reach Pampore. We cannot continue to wait for the authorities to take action while accidents continue to occur due to the poor condition of the road. “Today, residents have heaved a sigh of relief as we ourselves started to repair this road. Whatever is possible for us, we will do for the safety of women, elderly and school going children,” he said.
