Twice a month, Srinagar surpasses two decade-old heat record

Mercury settles at 35.7 degree Celsius

Srinagar, Jul 27: For the second time in the month of July, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has once again recorded the highest temperature in the last 25 years as the mercury settled at 35.7 degree Celsius on Saturday.
Since 1999, Srinagar recorded the highest maximum temperature on July 04, 2024 and today again, it settled at 35.7 degree Celsius, the data available reveals.
The temperature settled 5.8 degree Celsius above normal in Srinagar.
Besides, Kokernag, Qazigund, Kupwara also recorded the heat wave again today with mercury settling at 32.5 degree Celsius, 32.6 degree Celsius and 35.6 degree Celsius respectively. Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, has recorded 30.1 degree Celsius.
Kokernag has recorded a 7.1 degree temperature above normal.
Jammu City has, however, recorded a day temperature of 35.1 degree Celsius, which shows that Srinagar was warmer than Jammu today.
Banihal has recorded a maximum temperature of 30.6 degree Celsius, Batote, Katra and Bhaderwah recorded a maximum temperature of 28.2 degree Celsius, 32.0 degree Celsius and 31.2 degree Celsius.
However, the weatherman has predicted a significant fall in the temperature from 29th July onwards.
Director Meteorological department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that brief spell of rain, thundershower is expected at isolated places of Kashmir division & light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places of Jammu division.
From July 29 to July 31, generally cloudy with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershower at scattered to fairly widespread places of Kashmir division & widespread places of Jammu division.
He added that from August 01 to August 04, the weather would remain generally cloudy with spells of intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places of Kashmir division & most places of Jammu division.
Meanwhile, the MeT has issued an advisory, saying that significant fall is expected in day temperature from 29th July onwards.
“Intense showers for brief period with possibility of Landslides/Mudslides and shooting stones over few vulnerable places with possibility of heavy Rainfall at few places of Jammu division,” the advisory reads. (KNO)
