Srinagar, Aug 20: On World Mosquito Day, medical professionals have called for heightened awareness and vigilance to prevent mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya, which can be severe and even fatal in some cases.
Dr Irfan Ahmad from GMC Anantnag said it is important to take necessary precautions to protect against these diseases.
“Preventing mosquito breeding is crucial,” he said. The doctor advised people to eliminate standing water from containers, flower pots and other potential breeding sites.
“Regular cleaning of water storage containers and proper waste disposal can significantly reduce mosquito populations,” he added.
Dr Basharat from the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) said that personal protection measures, such as applying mosquito repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing and using mosquito nets, are essential. “Window screens must be installed to keep mosquitoes out of homes,” he suggested.
Both doctors said that public education is crucial, as many people do not take mosquito-borne diseases seriously enough.
Dr Basharat called for community involvement and regular inspections and fumigation in high-risk areas by the authorities.
Mosquito bites, common in warm and humid climates, cause an immune response that leads to red bumps, itching and swelling. To alleviate these symptoms, doctors recommend avoiding scratching, using cold compresses and taking antihistamines. Over-the-counter creams should be used with caution, they said.
The medical community’s message is clear: prevention is critical, and public cooperation is essential to reduce the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases.
