Sheikh Sameer Manzoor
Jammu and Kashmir, revered as the land of saints, has been blessed by spiritual giants such as Ameer-e-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (RA), Sheikh-ul-Alam Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA), Syed Us Sadaat Mir Syed Hussain Simnani (RA), Sultan-ul-Arifeen Sheikh Hamza Makhdoomi (RA), and numerous other Awliyas and spiritual figures, whose legacies have turned the region into a spiritual sanctuary. Despite this rich heritage, Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing a worrying increase in drug consumption and societal ills. The drift from these traditional values, along with political instability, unemployment, and psychological distress, has fueled this crisis. The spiritual wisdom that once steered society’s moral direction now feels remote to many grappling with contemporary challenges. The weakening of these spiritual ties and the sway of external influences have rendered the populace susceptible to addiction and ethical decay, highlighting the critical need to re-engage with the teachings that historically nourished and elevated Jammu and Kashmir. Amidst its scenic beauty, Jammu and Kashmir confronts a severe crisis that endangers the essence of its community: drug addiction. This scourge, with its extensive consequences, has trapped numerous individuals, especially the youth, who represent the future of the area.
The drug problem in Jammu and Kashmir has reached catastrophic proportions. According to the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, approximately 700,000 plus individuals in the region are grappling with substance abuse. This figure represents not just a statistic but a profound crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of lives. The epidemic has had a particularly severe impact on the youth. Approximately 90% of those affected are between the ages of 17 and 33, a demographic that represents the future of the region. Within this age group, around 80% are young men, while young women account for approximately 20%. These figures highlight a crisis that is deeply embedded in the societal fabric, affecting both genders but disproportionately impacting young men.
The consequences of drug addiction are far-reaching. It devastates individuals physically and psychologically, leading to a myriad of health problems including chronic diseases, mental health disorders, and a weakened immune system. The impact on families is equally severe. Addiction often leads to broken homes, strained relationships, and economic hardship. The community at large suffers from the erosion of social values and the destabilization of societal structures. Amidst this dire situation, Shaykh Hami emerges as a beacon of hope and a formidable force against the drug scourge. His efforts combine spiritual wisdom with practical action, creating a comprehensive strategy to combat addiction and restore hope to a beleaguered community. He emphasizes the grave prohibition of drug use in Islam, citing the Quranic verse, “Do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction” (Quran 2:195). He also references the Hadith: “Every intoxicant is Khamr, and every Khamr is Haram” (Sahih Muslim 2003). He asserts that drugs not only harm the body and mind but also corrupt the soul, leading individuals away from the path of righteousness. He stresses the importance of community efforts to combat this menace, aligning with the broader Islamic teachings of preserving health and well-being.
Shaykh Hami’s approach to the drug epidemic is deeply rooted in his understanding of the crisis, which he sees not only as a physical or psychological issue but also as a profound spiritual challenge. He views drug addiction as a threat to the community’s soul, eroding the dreams and futures of many young individuals. His response is a blend of spiritual guidance and practical interventions, tackling both the symptoms and underlying causes of addiction. In 2012-2013, he took a significant step by presenting a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against liquor and drug bans in the Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly. However, despite the PIL’s acceptance, the government did not implement the necessary measures to address the crisis, likely due to the belief that the drug and alcohol industry was economically beneficial for J&K. Additionally, he launched an offline signature campaign against drug and alcohol use in Kashmir, garnering nearly 7 lakh signatures, setting a record. His actions underscore his dedication to combating social ills, despite governmental hesitance. His bold stance against the drug crisis in Kashmir, especially his public call for a drug ban, has subjected him to numerous attacks. Recognized for his work through his organization Karwan-e-Islami International, he has been fervently campaigning against the drug scourge, highlighting its catastrophic effects on the youth and the wider society. His outspoken opposition has angered drug barons and vendors, resulting in direct threats and violent assaults against him. Nevertheless, he persists in condemning the widespread drug misuse in Kashmir, offering counselling to the affected youth, and calling for stricter regulations. His dedication to rescuing the youth from this societal blight has earned him respect as a leader, yet it has also marked him as a target for those benefiting from the narcotics trade. Despite the ongoing threats from these formidable entities, his resolve to safeguard the future of Kashmir’s society stands firm. His comprehensive strategy extends beyond traditional approaches, blending spiritual insights with practical solutions to create a holistic framework for recovery. This dual approach recognizes that addiction is not merely a physical or psychological ailment but a profound spiritual and emotional challenge. By addressing these dimensions, He aims to provide individuals with the tools they need to rebuild their lives and reconnect with their sense of purpose. His aim to establish Spiritual centres across the J&K is a testament to his innovative approach. These centres will serve as both sanctuaries and catalysts for change, offering a space where individuals can find spiritual solace and practical support. They will provide a refuge from the temptations and stresses that often lead to drug abuse, fostering an environment where healing and growth can flourish. The programs and services that will be offered at these centres should be designed to address the root causes of addiction, and should provide a comprehensive support system for those seeking to overcome their struggles. Shaykh Hami played a significant role in closing many wine and alcohol shops across the Jammu and Kashmir region. His efforts were particularly impactful at Sheikh Ul Alam International Airport in Srinagar, where his activism led to the closure of alcohol outlets. His work reflects his dedication to promoting moral and ethical values in society, particularly within the context of Islamic teachings, and his continuous fight against social evils. His leadership in this area has had a lasting influence on the region.
Central to Shaykh Hami’s strategy is the belief that spiritual healing plays a crucial role in overcoming addiction. He views drug abuse as symptomatic of deeper issues such as spiritual emptiness, emotional distress, and a lack of purpose. To address these issues, He wants integrated spiritual teachings with practical support, aiming to provide a holistic solution to addiction. One of the most impactful aspects of his strategy is that there should be establishment of Spiritual centres across Jammu and Kashmir. These centres will be designed to offer both spiritual solace and practical support. They will provide a refuge from the stresses and temptations that often lead to drug abuse, offering a nurturing environment where individuals can find purpose and belonging. At these centres, individuals will be engaged in spiritual practices, receive counselling, and participate in community support programs. The goal is to create an environment where individuals can reconnect with their faith and values, which is crucial for overcoming addiction. He believes and have faith that if the Spiritual centres are established they will serve as sanctuaries of hope and healing. They will be more than just places of worship; they will be hubs of community support and personal transformation. The centres will offer a range of services, including spiritual counselling, educational workshops, and support groups. These services will be designed to address the multifaceted nature of addiction, providing individuals with the tools they need to recover and rebuild their lives.
At the heart of these centres there will be a commitment to spiritual growth and personal development. Shaykh Hami believes that reconnecting with one’s faith and values is essential for overcoming addiction. These centres will provide a space where individuals can engage in spiritual practices, such as meditation and prayer, which help to cultivate a sense of inner peace and purpose. This spiritual foundation will be crucial for individuals seeking to overcome the challenges of addiction. In addition to spiritual support, the centres will also offer practical assistance. This includes counselling services, job training programs, and educational workshops. These services will be designed to help individuals develop the skills and knowledge they need to lead productive and fulfilling lives. By addressing both the spiritual and practical aspects of addiction, these Spiritual centres will provide a comprehensive approach to recovery.
